4D SOUND SYNTHESIS is a new spatialisation system, initiated and developed by composer Paul Oomen. Sonostruct~ is commisioned to design the software application for this system. Unlike many other comparable systems that focus on a horizontal display of sounds - 4D SOUND SYNTHESIS is able to position virtual soundsources above and beneath the listener as well. The fourth dimension is change over time - the speed with which a sound moves through space. The technical features of the system open completely new possibilities and insight in composing with space and movement. The perception of subtle to heavy movements of sound plays a prominent role for the musical experience of the listener. Controlling these magnitudes makes it possible to create numerous suggestions of virtual spaces and atmospheres. The system is currently under construction. In september 2008 a first testphase was realised with impressive results. Within the coming year 4D SOUND SYNTHESIS will be developed and showcased as a 48-speaker installation. Currently Paul Oomen is working on the opera NIKOLA especially for this system. The expected premiere is 2010.
