VERKADE SOUND INSTALLATION

[ Installation and sound design // 15-speaker installation for a museum ]

Comissioned by the Zaans Museum
In collaboration with Claudia Rumondor

Description

The Dutch chocolate-, biscuit- and waxinebrand Verkade built a museum - Verkade Paviljoen - where over hundred years of its history is being exhibited. The exibition consists of pictures, old packaging, interactive videogames and a variety of original machines which were used throughout the years.

Together with composer Claudia Rumondor a 15-speaker installation was realized for amplifying four of her compositions which are played every ten minutes in the main hall of the museum. The pieces for saxophones - performed by the Berlage Saxophone Quartet - are sonically spread throughout the room which is filled with a variety of big old running productionmachines. The four compositions each fill the space in a different way - in concept, composition and spatialisation. Melodies enhancing the identities of the machines, clouds of sonic fog surrounding them, polyrhythmic structures playing along with the mechanic sounds and an abstract piece creating a more unpredictable organic atmosphere in the industrial environment.

Recording, soundproduction, installation and sound design was done by Poul Holleman.
